THW - German Federal Agency for Technical Relief
THW is a governmental organisation (GO) under the auspices of the German Federal Ministry of the Interior. It is a non-profit organisation.
THW was founded as the German governmental disaster relief organisation in 1950. Its tasks are defined by federal law and include technical relief in the sectors of civil defence, humanitarian aid, and disaster relief.
As a federal agency THW consists of its headquarters in Bonn, 8 state offices, 66 regional offices and 668 volunteer local sections across Germany. Among THW's staff are about 890 employees and more than 76.000 volunteers, most of them technicians trained in the sector of disaster preparedness, management, response and reconstruction.
Upon request of the German government (Ministry of the Interior and Ministry of Foreign Affairs) as well as of the United Nations, THW has been providing manifold assistance in a large scope of emergencies in Germany or abroad since its creation in 1950.
This assistance may range from water purification, the construction of complete refugees camps, search and rescue (SAR) operations, the reconstruction of dwellings and the rehabilitation of technical & social infrastructure for the repatriation of refugees, as well as of an advisory service for foreign authorities during emergencies or in the sector of disaster preparedness.
Furthermore, in the field of civil protection, THW plays an active part in the EU Community Mechanism and continuously extends and intensifies its international relations.
For THW training in civil protection is of a very high priority. As the work of THW is based on volunteer engagement, the training methods and contents are focused on volunteers. The national and international training programs are carried out at the two federal training centres of THW in Neuhausen and Hoya.
